August 28, 2012

As a value added service the APA provides information about references cited during the examination process of the JPO. This means that we provide information about citations of your patent (patent application) that appeared during the examination of patent applications from third parties. This is valuable information that can be used for :
1 Gathering of information about related technology
2 Opportunity for finding prospective licensees
3 Investigating the possibility of patent infringement etc.

I would like to introduce an example for information about cited references. Let us have a look at the patent for the blue light emitting diode. (Patent No. 2628404) This is a famous patent that made a company pay 20,000,000,000 Yen as it was matter of a lawsuit over remuneration for employee invention. This patent was mentioned as cited reference in 8 patent applications and these patent applications were again mentioned as cited reference in other applications. You can see that this patent had a strong impact. Furthermore you can find further citations of the citations until the 3rd generation.

For APA clients, if requested we provide information about the cited references of your patent at the time of registration and when you instruct us to pay the 3rd year annuities. Please see this as an opportunity to use the APA for your Japanese patent applications.
